Their timing couldn't have been better because one of our blog followers emailed me about what is plaguing our tomatoes. It is bloom rot. It's caused by periods of heavy rain and then dry spells and watering the plants directly. Thanks to the links provided by our blogger follower, it seems like this bloom rot is most common early in the season and that it won't affect the rest of the garden and doesn't mean that our tomatoes will continue to have the rot. (Thankfully!) We had a good round of rain ... and then for a several weeks after, some really hot, dry weather. So, I can totally see that this is our issue. I so appreciate having answers ... and these links are great resources. Thanks, Jim!
So, I told you that the kids asked about the harvest I had this morning. So, I went in and got them to show off. I offered up the pepper to Katie and Daris asked if he could eat the tomato. I said sure. (It was important to him that I had washed it first! hehehehe) He liked it okay ... then Katie asked if she could take a bite of the pepper! SURE!!!!!!!! They were surprised to see the seeds inside. I am really enjoying this new perspective. I take for granted the seeds in peppers. But, they started yapping about planting the seeds! So, they moistened the seedling tray that a neighbor donated to the project and they started a little side project. It would be super groovy if something sprang from this snack time. Daris and Alex both tried the pepper, too. He said it was "spicy". Ummm? A green pepper. That was curious to me, too! Katie took the other half home for dinner. :-)
