7/17/10 - Growing & Growing (And TONS of Basil)

Just a few days without posting makes me really see how much the veggies are growing. I haven't posted as often because the neighborhood kids have been staying indoors due to the heat or they are at swim meets. Taking pictures of the garden every day without their bright faces seems kind of boring. It is amazing to see how much it has grown though in just a couple days. I guess that's how a garden works ... and I am finally paying attention! Side by side comparison with the pictures helps, too! :-)

I'm doing everything I can NOT to pick the tomatoes and eggplants. I know the kids will want to harvest. I'm going to see about trying to round a few of them up this evening to help me pluck and to learn how to tie back the cherry tomatoes in the newer box.

This experience is having a positive affect on the kids and I catch them talking about it here and there. "Troy", our critter slayer, was explaining to one of his little friends that "veggies that you grow in your own garden taste better and are better for you!" Now, how awesome is that?! Talk about making my heart sing. I really dig the fact, too, that when the kids are talking to each other about things, they think that the adults in the area can't hear them. It's cute. Daris is already contemplating about what to grow in the next season. I better start doing my homework. Anyone know if we can grow in the winter months?
