Home Depot "Training"

Tonight I went to Home Depot with a neighbor and friend (Kelly) to learn about raised beds, composting, and rain barrels. The lady doing the class was a stand in and decided to show us how to plant in containers. Ummm.... Not really what we had expected. But, it was still interesting and the people we met were nice and interesting. One woman attending the class came specifically to learn how to get critters to stay away from her garden. I had fun passing on my crushed red pepper information ... and Kelly explained how her mom puts cayenne on the plant itself to keep deer from eating them. Pretty fun!

I almost purchased a composting barrel thingy that spins like a bingo cage. But, thankfully, Kelly talked me into checking out Amazon first for other options. THANKS, Kels! I really like the idea of composting and I really dig the idea of a rain barrel to recycle water for the garden. One challenge for the rain barrel is that I have a very small area where my down spout is located ... so, that will need some investigating. The composting would be groovy to get the kids to participate and understand how the whole process works. Their parents may not be all that keen on saving their scrapes and such ... but, the end result could be used by all when ever they need some good-lovin' planting material.

Kels reminded me tonight about how the kids went out to collect worms for our dirt! They did a great job. During the first dirt dump, they had to have collected about 24 wormies ... and then the next fill, they got a dozen or so. We have some very happy soil going on ... which explains how come our plants are popping like crazy! (The rain tonight helps, too!)

  1. The Home Depot class was fun and I think composting is a GREAT idea! Hope you were able to find some good deals on Amazon or elsewhere online. :) Amazon tends to be my fav. I bet with all this rain we've been getting, the kids will be able to find more worms!!

  2. Thanks for posting. The kids are more interested these days in fire flies. :-) Yet, with the new box, I think they're remembering how the worms help the soil!
