6/15/10 - Rain is my Friend

I am still so amazed at how fast the garden is growing! These pictures were taken around 6 PM this evening. Yesterday's pictures were taken at dusk as the lights were just starting to light up. And the growth is visible. Two of the mom's stopped by to check it out. They were as excited as I am.

It's fun to see the interest and enjoyment that Project Big Hugs is bringing to the neighborhood (and to me!). It's been a long time since I've gardened. My mom liked growing tomatoes and peppers when I was young. I have an older brother and Mom would make us weed her garden (usually in the middle of the day -- and summers, as you know, are HOT HOT HOT and HUMID!) to punish us for sibling fights. Then as an adult, I did some container gardening ... growing tomatoes and peppers. But, the watering commitment caused me stress and it wasn't all that fun after a while. My job also had me working long hours and traveling, so there was no time to really use the ripe veggies in cooking.

I'm really thankful for this project. It's wonderful to get excited about growing veggies again and to get young gardeners inspired as well. It's fun for me to also grow veggies that I've never grown before. I'm learning tons!! For example, I'll keep the okra away from the squash next time. The okra has been totally pushed out and steam-rolled to the point that I'm not able to replant the little dude. (The extra box will be helpful next year!)
