April 16 & 17, 2010 - The Build

At 9:00, I went out back to start building my monster box. I had my battery powered screwdriver, screws, and brackets for the legs. I was ready to go!

My first attempt to screw one panel together proved challenging. Little did I know that my screwdriver wasn't up for the job. A very frustrating hour later, I devised another plan. Borrow my neighbor's electric screwdriver. (Thankfully, I have handy neighbors!) I'm still trying to remember why I bought a battery powered screwdriver when the electric one is so much more powerful and cheaper? It's not like I'm drilling away from a power source. I think I had sucker stamped on my forehead when I was buying tools. Anyway, it was pretty smooth sailing after that.

My measurements were off on the base of the box ... but, that "mistake" serves as a nice ledge for some of the shorter gardeners. Screwing in the first short panel to the long panels was also challenging for just my two hands. My cursing caused alarm with my neighbor who ended up coming around to give me her two hands. From 10:00 to 2:00, I cruised. (I stopped at 2:00 so that I could make Happy Hour Friday!) I finished all of the box and just needed to install the feet.

The next day (Saturday) after "running" a 5k (I walked as much as I ran and did NO training what so ever ... not sure what I was thinking!), I finished the box by putting on the feet. Again, I went off plan and installed the feel only to allow for drainage. Making the drainage holes was loads of fun ... I had to control myself.

That evening, Taz and her youngest daughter, Gaby, came over for dinner and we moved the monster box into place. (That joker is a beast and once she got into place, I knew it wasn't moving ever again!)

Now ... now much dirt are we going to need? A LOT!
